Chooks The Organic Gardener’s All-Rounder

By Julie Williams Chooks (chickens) have been domesticated for many centuries. They originate from the Malaysian rainforests so they love to free-range. Chooks are such easy animals to care for, can make great pets for children and are a valuable resource for the organic gardener. Youll need to check with your local council to find out their regulations. Some councils wont allow you to keep any poultry, whereas others willsome even allow roosters. Some of the benefits of keeping chooks: - they supply you with beautiful, fresh eggs - daily - your left overs will never go in the bin again (reduces waste) - provide you with an excellent fertilizer base - they dig over the soil (so you don’t have to) - they reduce insect numbers; great for around your orchard - provide you with live entertainment Basic requirements * Dry, fox proof shelter * A safe place to lay eggs and hatch chicks (if you have a rooster) * A roosting perch off the ground (allow about 20cm per bird) * Layer pellets (or crumble for chicks) should make up the majority of their diet. * Kitchen scraps are great for variety * Wheat, corn or other grains should be offered occasionally, but not form the majority of their diet * Birds have no teeth; they swallow small pebbles or grit to grind down their food in their gizzard. They must have access to a supply of grit for this purpose. * Never feed chocolate, coffee, avocado or rhubarb, as they are toxic to chooks * They must always have access to clean, fresh water. If you dont plan on letting your chooks free range in a garden area during the day, they will be much happier if you provide them with an outside run where they will be able to scratch at the ground and enjoy the sunlight. I lock my chooks up from sunset to about midday. This way theyve almost always laid their eggs by then, so that I dont have to go on a daily egg hunt! Old grass-catchers from lawn movers make great laying boxes just the right size and they offer ventilation. Liquid Fertilizer Chook manure is a great base for a liquid fertilizer or to add to your compost heap. You never use it fresh though, as bird manure also contains their urine and will burn your crops. To make a liquid manure, place it in a porous bag in a bucket and fill the bucket with water. After about three weeks or so you can use the water on and around your plants, diluted to look like weak tea. Chook Manure for Compost If you provide a litter of straw, hay or sawdust in your chooks living quarters they will turn it into great compost material for you. They will scratch it, add manure and turn it over. You can add layers of this organic matter to your compost heap or leave it to turn into a fine, dark substance. Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. It is my mission to encourage as many people as possible to start organic gardening. This will improve both our individual lives and the wellbeing of our personal and global environments. Mother’s Day Gifts

By Kevin Stith People often assume that Mothers Day is a something promoted by Hallmark to make you buy their cards. But, in fact, the tradition of celebrating Mothers Day is an old one. The Greeks and the Romans worshipped the mother of the Gods, and although ones mother was not worshipped, the celebration was a beginning. The English celebrated Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of lent; this celebration is very similar to the current Mothers Day celebrations. Anna M. Jarvis is credited with bringing this custom to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. Today, Mothers Day is a celebration of a mothers unconditional love, nourishing, and nurturing as well as her undaunted spirit. Celebrated on the first Sunday in May, children and fathers make sure that the day is special and memorable, commemorating it by buying something special, making something nice, and trying to make the day perfect for their mom. Buying a gift has become very important, and if you pay close attention to your mothers likes and dislikes, picking a present should be relatively easy. Flowers, perfume and chocolates are the staples of Mothers Day gifts, and most mothers will love anything their children. Even if you want the gift to be extra special, your choices are endless. You can get her something practical that she really wants, you can get her a personalized gift like a printed t-shirt or a plaque, or you can even name a star after her. If you don’t have the money to spend, you dont have to worry, as no one understands you better than your mom. In fact, she might feel bad if you spend more than you can afford. Less expensive alternatives for gifts include making make her something or giving her coupons for chores you can take on when she wants a break. What you must remember while picking up or making a present is that it is the thought that counts. Say Goodbye to Stomach Ulcers with Mastic Gum

By Judy Phillips How many of you have ever heard of a resin produced by the Pistacia lentiscus tree called mastic gum? Well, it has been used for a myriad of ailments in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries for at least 3,000 years. Now, the advantages of this naturally-occurring resin are being revived for its antimicrobial effects. Numerous studies have already been published on this wonderful resin with respect to the gastrointestinal environment, therefore acquiring the respect of the scientific and medical community. Several studies on the effect of mastic gum on gastric ulcers have been performed, and the studies have shown positive results. It provided symptomatic relief of ulcers, reduced the intensity of gastric mucosal damage caused by anti-ulcer drugs and aspirin, and possessed antacid and cytoprotective qualities. In 1998, researchers at University Hospital in Nottingham, England, conducted a very interesting study in which they demonstrated that mastic gum kills H. pylori, the bacterium that causes ulcers. They wrote, Even low doses of mastic gum1 gram per day for 2 weekscan cure peptic ulcers very rapidly. Please be aware, however, that the H. pylori bacteria that were killed in this study died in the test tube. Then there is a doctor by the name of Leo Galland of New York who is very well known for his expertise with chronic gastric disorders, intestinal permeability, ulcers, and dyspepsia. His work led him to use mastic gum with his patients, in particular, the ones with H. pylori present. Says Doctor Galland on mastic gum, I am treating patients with dyspepsia and gastritis who also have Helicobacter in the stool. I do not use synthetic antibiotics, just mastic gum. In my experience, a dosage of 500 mg to 1 gram twice a day for two weeks has produced a clearing of symptoms associated with the elimination of the Helicobacter antigen from the stool. Ninety percent experience a clearing of symptoms, and 80% experience an elimination of Helicobacter in the stool after only two weeks. Beauty Today - All Smoke and Mirrors?

By Danna Schneider Did you ever notice that the bar is continually being raised on exactly what physical characteristics define beauty? As I sit in front of the TV, I am bombarded by beauties with pouty lips, perfect bone structure, flawless skin, more “voluptuous” upper regions, size 2 waists, and hair that resembles spun silk. Take these same beauties and plop them back in time 20-30 years, when the advent of modern cosmetic technology had not even begun to reach its full potential. Do you think they would have had those same attributes you find yourself longing for when faced with these images? My guess is probably not, or at least not to the same extent. True, genetics play a role in physical beauty, but with the likes of total “extreme” makeover reality TV (The Swan, Extreme Makeover, Dr. Beverly Hills) and abundant publicity, we see that beauty and cosmetic improvement can now be achieved by a few thousand dollars and a good plastic surgeon. Not only that, but cosmetics in general are now so technologically advanced, you can improve your looks by personal makeup application and home treatments. There are now do-it-yourself cosmetic treatments such as home microdermabrasion kits, chemical peels, “botox” creams and gels, teeth whiteners, hair removal treatments, cellulite treatments, professional hair straighteners and colors, self tanners, lip enlargers, acne treatments, and the list goes on and on. Cosmetics marketers and science have joined forces to give women everything they ever wanted to be their most beautiful, and feel better about themselves. Women are benefitting by so many companies competing for a piece of these fairly new markets by lower, more competitive prices. Not only are there new breakthroughs in the world of cosmetic science, but there are constantly new studies and discoveries in the field of nutrition, fitness, and wellness. Combine this with the new wave of technologically advanced cosmetics, supplements, and treatments, and you’ve got a recipe for a healthier, longer, more satisfying life for those of us who decide to take advantage of the advanced knowledge of our time. So, does your desire to be your best and most beautiful self make you shallow, less credible, or somehow jeopardize your feminist agendas? Unless you’ve somehow compromised your integrity, morals, or core beliefs along the way, the answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT! As long as you are not putting yourself at high risk for physical harm, obsessing endlessly, or spending your life savings, investing time and money into your beauty ultimately is an investment in your well being, self esteem, and many times, mental and physical health. Feeling beautiful is part of what makes us women. Come on, it’s just plain FUN to experiment with different looks and different products! It feels good to be noticed, and when you feel beautiful, you tend to radiate confidence and power. It is inherent in our nature to want to feel feminine and look and feel our best, and there is nothing wrong with it, as long as it is not all-consuming. As a self-proclaimed “product junkie”, I can attest that many of these newly engineered products really do work, as I have tried nearly all of them in the quest to look and feel my best. I can’t wait to see what they’ll come out with next, as every new product seems to top the last. Hey, women have come a long way, and we deserve to feel sexy and confident - beyond smoke and mirrors! Easter Giving - A Handy Guide for the Holiday

By Allison Mueller When people think of holiday gifts, they usually think about the Christmas season. However, people forget that Easter is another time for holiday giving. Because Christmas gets all the attention, its no surprise that many of us are at a loss for what to get for friends and family members when Easter rolls around. Granted, Easter is not as big of a gift giving holiday as Christmas, but its still a perfect season for giving that special someone a gift to show your affection. Easter is best known for the tradition of giving Easter baskets. Therefore, one easy gift idea is to order personalized Easter baskets for your loved ones. You can fill these baskets with some of their favorite treats. If you are familiar with their hobbies and pastimes, you might think of adding some fun relevant items to the basket for example, coffee, mints, and a new mug. No matter how you decide to fill it, make the basket personalfill it with things that you think theyll love. Easter brings to most minds thoughts of spring and flowers. Walk outdoors and observe the many plants and greens springing up all over the place. Accordingly, another Easter gift idea is to get each of those special someones a basket of spring plants. In addition, spring is a time when many begin to start preparing to their gardens. Consider getting the gardeners in your family perennial seeds for their gardens. The gift of seeds is an especially great gift because the plants will continue to grow as the season progresses. Not only that, but when the season comes to an end, the bulbs will remain to grow again next spring. Plants and perennials really make a gift that keeps on giving! Lets face it, one of the most satisfactory gifts to get anyone is food. Why not try something new this Easter? In my opinion, one of the best treats to get anytime, but especially during the Easter holiday, is cheesecake. Why cheesecake? Cheesecake is an ideal dessert, whether you intend to serve it to your family and friends, or keep for it all for yourself. And cheesecake is an easy gift to give, as it is sure to please. Cheesecakes come in a great assortment of flavors including mint chocolate, strawberry, coffee and, of course, classic style cheesecake. In other words, theres a cheesecake flavor for everyones tastes; even the Easter bunny cant fail to please if he delivers a cheesecake! The Easter season is an exciting time of the year; be sure to enjoy the holiday with your family and friends. Dont feel overwhelmed when you start thinking about Easter giving. Put these ideas to work for any of your loved ones. We invite you to visit Elite Cheesecakes for a wide variety of elegant cheesecakes including sugar free cheesecakes. The First “M” of Marketing - The Market for Professional Service Providers

By David Rachford In the first of a three part series, I want to talk about the first of the “Three M’s” of Marketing - they are: 1. Market 2. Media 3. Message When an professional service provider like a CPA or Attorney looks at a “Market” or “Niche” there is at first a tendancy to look at “everyone” as a potential client. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Just like you woulnd’t see an orthopedic surgeon for a skin condition, we all have our specialties in services we offer, and problems we solve. Specializing limits your liability and allows you to focus your resources. As you define your customer, you further define the Market you wish to serve. For example, you want to serve business owners who have the following charachteristics: - Revenues between 500K-5M - Business established more than 5 years - 3-50 employees (or more) - The ability to pay your fees If you are a CPA and serve individuals and provide tax services - what is the market you wish to serve? is it geographical? Is it within certain Zip codes, or employees of certain major employers in the area? As small business owners and professional service providers - we don’t want to flood the marketplace with our Message with all Media, we want to focus our efforts as much as possible within our chosen Market - which will greatly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our investment. And don’t forget the most important Market of all: The Market you already have established - don’t spend all your energy on acquiring new customers, spend time, effort and money reminding your current clients the value you bring to the table. You’ll be rewarded with more referrals as a bonus. David Rachford is the founder of http://www.cpamarketingcenter.com which provides marketing products, services and turnkey marketing programs to the accounting profession. Bad Credit Loans: Be Careful!

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Lenkefi]Peter Lenkefi If youve gotten yourself over your head in debt, and suddenly have a need for cash right away, it is possible to get a loan for bad credit. Loans for bad credit will not give you a worse rating if you require a non-bad credit loan later down the road, and they will get you some money very quickly - perhaps too quickly. But how could a loan for bad credit be too quick? Well, if you decide to get a bad credit loan, apply, and then suddenly WOW you have the money the next day, have you really thought out this bad credit loan adequately? Have you researched all of the other bad credit loan options, or did you just pick the first one that struck your fancy? Did you ask around, surf the Internet, and talk to your banking institution before applying for that bad credit loan? Did you do some reading at the library, crunch some numbers, and talk to your family about this bad credit loan, first? If you think about it for a bit, there will be an interest rate with your bad credit loan probably more than with any other loan you carry. Its a risk for a lender to extend credit to someone with bad financial history, so they overcompensate with higher interest rates. Rates as high as 15 point over prime, at times. Do you really need to go into more debt asking for a bad credit loan, just to pay off another bill? Isnt there another way? This can all become a huge problem if you eventually need more money because of your bad credit which means another loan. And then another, and another you get the drift. Your interest on a $3000 loan could be as high as $500, not including the actual bad credit loan repayment itself. Can you afford this? All for a bad credit loan debt. This cycle may only become a problem if you manage your bad credit loans poorly, or borrow more money than you can afford to pay off. To avoid these types of bad credit loan issues, ONLY borrow what you can afford just because the process is super quick, doesnt mean you need to come to a decision just as quickly. Take your time. Research everything well. Talk it over with friends and family. Make sure your payments wont be over your head, especially with all of your other debts. A bad credit loan is a serious thing dont enter into it lightly. Perhaps talk to some friends or family first, instead of adding to your debt and asking for a bad credit loan. Maybe if you take this choice, or perhaps try and find extra income instead, you can avoid the whole bad credit loan trap, forever. And with less bad credit comes a lesser need for a loan and the cycle stops. Aromatherapy: Past and Present

By Michael Russell Since time immemorial, folk medicine has claimed that certain aromatic oils derived from plants have curative powers, not only to heal the ills of the body but also to soothe and heal the troubled spirit. Depending on the nature of the problem, an oil derived from the roots, bark, leaves, or flowers of a plant is massaged into the skin. Or it may be swallowed or inhaled in the form of a vaporized mist. There is ample evidence in the literature of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans that aromatherapy was an indispensable part of medical practice and there are countless references in their writings as well as in the Bible to the restorative effect of fragrant oils on the soul in distress. During the Middle Ages and through the eighteenth century, aromatics continued to be used as remedies, but eventually, with the development of the science of chemistry, many of the age old practices were discarded in favor of medicines synthesized and standardized in the laboratory. It was not until 1920, when a Frenchman coined the term aromatherapy and wrote a scholarly book on the subject, that it began to be taken seriously, especially in France, where 40 years later another Frenchman wrote about his successful use of aromatic oils during World War II to hasten the healing wounds and minimize scars. In France today, the cost of aromatics used therapeutically is reimbursable by the government’s health insurance. Since the 1960s aroma therapists have been attracting a growing number of adherents and together with herbalists they now offer a codified pharmacopoeia of oils said to alleviate PMS, stress, sinus congestion, arthritic pain, depression and chronic fatigue. At the same time, a growing body of anecdotal evidence is available to substantiate the effectiveness of aromatherapy. Scientific investigators have discovered that some aromas lower blood pressure, others change brain wave patterns and in specific instances where sporadic memory loss has become a pathological problem, certain smells associated with the patient’s past can trigger a normal response. At the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer in New York, a recent study of patients who were anxious about undergoing MRI procedures indicated that 75 percent were calmed by the scent of sweet vanilla. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center reported that a mixture of five floral fragrances relieved tension and anxiety in a group of menopausal women between 45 and 60. A popular application of aromatherapy is in body message. Serious practitioners whose purpose is to alleviate pain or to promote a feeling of relaxation and well being use hot compresses to open the pores of the skin for the penetration of the oil of choice during energetic manipulation of a particular part of the body. One of the most attractive aspects of aromatherapy is that is can be a do-it-yourself adventure. But keep in mind that because pure aromatic oils are very expensive, only small amounts find their way into even the most expensive bath oils and soaps. By trial and error you can experiment with the various naturally scented oils now available in body and bath shops as well as in well-stocked health stores. For their use in curing bodily ills, you can find “treatment” charts in naturopathic shops that sell natural oil blends.
